I would have agreed with you as recently as two weeks ago. However, I'm now hearing that our AD is doing Herculean things to position LA Tech for a possible run at one of the open opportunities in the AAC. And no, I don't really know anymore than that. But based upon this new info, I'm taking a wait and see approach to his performance evaluation. Fact is, if he gets the BIG things done, but doesn't necessarily get all the small things fixed, I'm okay with that.

Hopefully, getting the big thing done(for the first time ever probably)might allow the smaller things to get handled because we will have resources to pay experienced people more than a starting salary to do a better job on the small stuff.

Let me add this: From the mid 80s through the early 90s the athletic department promotion on campus was handled by the SGA.

At a time when you had a lot of aspiring politicians, it was really handled like a political campaign.

Like or hate his politics, when the late Lee Fletcher was SGA president he set up a system where the SGA identified a person in every organization on campus (a few hundred) that was interested in Tech athletics. The SGA then promoted and marketed to those individuals who in turn organized turnout within their own groups.

When the football and basketball programs took a dip beginning in 1992-1993 the leadership in the SGA at the time lost interest. It literally didn't recover until we entered the WAC in 2001 and the "Believe in the Blue" campaign and other organized efforts got the students involved again.
    Good stuff.

It's the job of the university (coaches, AD's , etc. ) to get the students involved through student organizations.

The "Wear Blue" campaign was grass roots and our leadership began shooting it down as soon as the horribly organized red out crap and red T began to show it's ugly face. We've never recovered from that bad leadership, but our former AD certainly didn't do anything but pour gas on the fire.

That would be Herculean. Especiallysince nobody has us on any list to be included. It would be all him.

    By who? The jokes?

You do realize the fans on the east side are, for the most part, members of student organizations and not random students who just want to be fans?

Ummm...... Yes for the Greek section. the rest are a group of students that don't go to games with so called clubs. Yes I was a student fall 14- spring 18. Used to chat on an old app called yik yak with about 200-500 other students. Yes we agreed and regularly made fun of ub and sga.

During my time I only met one quality ub member. The rest were out of touch with the rest of the students as a whole. They have their own space in toliver.

Also, the administration wouldn't let ub have a concert with any non Christian bands at the time. Churches out numbered the students. Plus ULM was getting big names like third eye blind, Iggy azalea and a few more big names that I can't think of. So yea the ub members and school administration made it easy to take shots at ub

The concert thing was definitely something those who organized events were made fun of for.

Thats why when they got Bowling for Soup before homecoming a few years ago, it was kind of surprising.

What the administration did to the SGA over several decades is a good example of why we're where we are today with student attendance and interest in Tech athletics.

Tech saw the downside of the SGA president having some power and a voice but never considered the upside of what the SGA once was and could be on campus.

Tech took their office space in Howard Auditorium away while also diminishing the organization in general.

If some of you are wondering how much interest there once was in the SGA consider the fact we had an election in the late 80s for SGA president where nearly half the student body turned out to vote in the primary. We had over 4,000 students physically go to the student center to cast a ballot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over 2 days in April.

Tech basically killed off the one organization that organized student interest in Tech athletics and never replaced that with a person or department within athletics to achieve the same goal.

People were saying the same thing 50 years ago. Not sure most people even know what they do, but the SGA is not a joke. The SGA is elected. The SGA serves a purpose by giving Tech students a voice in how the school is managed campus wide. For example, the SGA has a representative sitting on many campus boards, e.g., the Tech Athletic Council, who hires Head Football coaches, etc.... I'm disappointed to see The Historian's post immediately above this one, because it sounds like the SGA's power has been diminished over the years. The SGA used to be involved in many decisions involving the students.

I'm not as familiar with the Union Board. They always seemed a little artsy fartsy for my taste, but that's okay.
