Pretty soon, if not already, college football teams will be starting over every fall practice with practically a brand new team. This requires a different set of coaching skills and know-how. Those of us who have coached in the amateur/recreational ranks know this situation very well. On a typical soccer team with a roster of 18 players, usually I didn't know at least 12-13 of the kids and had maybe two weeks to put a team together before our first game.
I'm serious when I say this requires a different set of coaching know-how. Successful coaches, with winning teams year after year, embraced the challenge and have a system in place to deal with it.
Obviously Holtz failed miserably at this. He had a "new" team and went 3-9.
Surely though, you won’t have key players entering the portal. Fringe players who are only in on the rare kickoff or return team make sense. Players who are main cogs in the offense shouldn’t be transferring, right?
Maybe for the time being, but if not now then soon we'll see more and more of the transferring and it will impact key starters. This whole portal mess...and yes have a case of Dr. Pepper with ya to transfer to State in Fansville...is just now getting started and gathering steam.
I predict Nick Saban will bellyache about it when it hits Bama, say it should be banned, and then quickly adjust and become the best at it! It's what Saban does...be the best at everything.
Lyddy has a GREAT arm. If he holds his commit to LA Tech, I believe he'll blossom under Coach Sonny Cumbie, and become the next superstar QB in the NCAA. This could be one of those seminal moments in LA Tech history when two GREATS come together and compliment each other perfectly.
Get ready to sit back and watch the show of your life.
If he's a commit to another school (even if it is just ULALA), should we even be offering? I suppose it might be a case of the kid not wanting to play for Holtz (understandable) and now being more open to coming here. But, if he has already committed shouldn't he have to make the move, to initiate the change of commitments? Dosen't seem kosher to me.
