No new wars occurred when our gallant President Trump was in charge. Putin didn't wait very long to take advantage of the pathetic Sleepy Joe et al.

Saw a talking-head on BBC this morning saying this is it for Putin, he is finished back home. This will prove to be a disaster for Russia and the people there will not allow Putin to survive it politically.

Yeah, this can't be playing well back in the mother land. Maybe Ukraine isn't nearly as weak as our fake president.
I've said it before. Russia is not a great concern in the big scheme of things. Their entire GDP is only three times our defense budget. If we could actually get Germany and the other NATO nations to do what they've agreed to do in terms of military budgets, the Europeans could easily handle anything Russia could muster and squash them like a bug.
Now China is a different story. While we continue to forego our use of cheap domestically-produced energy and pay people to not work, they are balls to the wall producing goods at cheap prices because of that cheap energy and their slave labor. We are building, and becoming dependent on, the very monster we should fear. We need Trump back in a big way (bigly, if you will).
The Russkies, and their Belarus puppet allies, are enjoying some military successes today. I find it interesting that the Russkies have spray-painted huge white "Z" on all their vehicles. You can tell it was hurriedly done, a soldier with a spray can of white paint. I guess it's to identify themselves to avoid friendly fire mistakes. But, as one Ukranian resistance fighter pointed out, it also clearly marks them as the enemy.
Right now, the Russians are engaged in a wide-spread, across the entire nation of Ukraine attacks. Mostly air strikes on what they deem as key targets. Airports, bridges, railroads have all been struck. Attack helicopters and jets are engaged. The Russkie choppers expend a lot of defensive measures, flares designed to defeat heat-seeking rockets. But the Ukranians have already figured out their pattern, so they wait until after the flares are deployed and then they launch the stinger missiles and other heat-seeking rockets. So far 6 Russian helicopters are confirmed killed and 12 more severely damaged. No Russian jets have been downed...yet, according to the early reports.
A Ukrainian parliament member was interviewed LIVE on FOX this morning, he called on the US and NATO to provide air cover and then the 1 million-man strong Ukranian army/militia would/could handle the ground battle. Not gonna happen, I'm afraid. The Western chickenshits have no stomach for actually engaging in any kind of combat vs. the Putinites. Ukraine is on its own.
Don't trust the BBC.
Remember, the Russians largely view themselves as liberators, particularly of the Donbas after the fighting that has taken place there.
If we're going to navigate this, we've got to understand why Putin is doing what he's doing in better than first-grade terms.
A nuclear war with Russia would be the end of human civilization, so yes, I have no stomach for that.
In his own demented way Putin thinks he's in the right. But then so did Hitler.
And Putin has anticipated and is counting on that fear by the West. But, if all we do is lean on that...and don't think the Chicoms aren't watching how we react too...then you have just handed Putin (and the Chicoms) a free pass to invade any countries they want. At the end of the day, does it matter how you die, whether in a nuclear blast or because a Russian jet just dropped a thousand-pounder bomb down your chimney? You're dead either way.
It's to keep NATO off of his border, right? That's what he was insinuating.
But if he takes over Ukraine, he will share a border with Poland...where we will eventually establish a larger presence and perhaps this will cause Poland to actually fund their military in a big way and stop relying on the US for protection. That will put a larger hostile force on his border than he has ever had.
Putin doesn't have the economic power to wage a war against NATO, and if the members of NATO are adhering to the NATO bylaws, he shouldn't be able to push around many European members of NATO either.
Maybe he's just a dictator that wants to put the old Soviet Union back together, and looks for any sign of weakness in the West to take a little more real estate. Maybe it's just as simple as that.
Is this the same excuse we're using against the Houthis?
Last year he more or less explicitly stated that he wanted a guarantee against further NATO escalation in Ukraine. We refused. So we can't use the excuse that he was probably not telling the whole truth as to his intentions (which is of course likely).
It probably is that simple, yes. I don't know if he's interested in the Soviet Union, but he's certainly interested in Empire. And since the old bully, the American-led West, shows signs of obvious weakness, it's really just the smart thing to do to take advantage of the opportunity. Plus, its an easy sell to the people since he can just point to our role in destabilizing various polities around the world and say "follow me for glory or wait for the Americans to starve your children to death." Let's not act like we're above reproach here.
Which sucks for the civilians caught in the middle. But it always does.
