    Re: President Biden

Someone help me out here. Biden keeps saying a move to green energy, including electric cars, is the pathway to energy independence.

Given that China, Russia, Ukraine and a very few other nations provide the minerals needed to make batteries for these things, just exactly how will that lead to American independence? Seems like a pathway to dependence to me, not to mention the loss of millions of high-paying E&P jobs here at home.

I'm not even going to mention the environmental destruction associated with the way these minerals are being mined, nor will I mention that China will be unlikely to supply these minerals when they are in high demand and will instead produce batteries in slave labor camps using power produced by coal fired plants and thereby continue to destroy America's middle class (and make us weaker militarily).

I didn't even mention the obvious: Batteries and the manufacture of batteries are actually energy consumers, so the energy has to come from somewhere else. Add to that the fact that batteries self discharge whether they are being used or not, and it seems like even more energy will be needed for them to replace ICE vehicles.

Besides the smugness of the owners feeling they are saving the planet, I just don't see the upside.

Maybe we should put nuke reactors in electric vehicles. Once the new agreement is reached, we can probably buy the uranium from Iran (what they don't need for bombs).

We need someone like Donald Trump, if not Trump himself, to be POTUS for life! Yes! like the Supreme Court, a lifetime gig. Give him the line-item veto to clean up spending budgets presented by Congress, even a non-RINO GOP Congress. We are in a mess! (rant over...)

Mortgage rates hit 5%, the highest since 2011. Who was president in 2011? Oh yeah! obummer!

Fortunately the fate of electric vehicles isn’t tied to a specific type of battery, and new types are under development. Unfortunately, ICEs are tied to oil.

Electric vehicles generate less than half the carbon emissions cradle to grave. It also takes energy to mine and cast iron and Aluminum for ICEs.

For one thing, electric power generation and electric engines are more efficient than ICEs. Natural gas is also less carbon intensive than gasoline or diesel. You can also power an electric entirely from renewables or nuclear - not an option for ICEs.

    Speaking of carbon emissions...

Ethanol is much less fuel efficient than gasoline. Yet, the dimwit's solution for the oil shortage HE created is to add more ethanol to gasoline. That will reduce the MPG for cars on the road and increase carbon emissions quite a bit.

Personally, I don't give a crap about carbon emissions, because it's all BS. But for the folks that are hyperventilating about carbon, this should cause quite an uproar.

Which electric car are you driving?

The good news is that EVs don’t run on ethanol.

They run on whatever fuels the power plant. Coal, nuke, nat gas and oil mostly. Some hydro and very little wind or solar.

China is balls to the wall on coal plants, so it's a good thing we don't live on the same globe as they do.

Although it is bad that China uses so much coal, EVs are better than ICEs with respect to carbon emissions even in China.

I don't care about carbon emissions. But, if they make an electric car that costs the same as an ICE car that has a 500 mile range and the battery doesn't degrade after a few years (leaving me with a 250 - 300 mile range), I'm in.

Naturally I'll keep an ICE generator on hand so I can charge the thing and have the freedom to travel during brown outs and black outs when our grid shuts down from storms or being hacked by evil leftists or the Chinese (same thing, really).
