    Re: The Big C

Thanks all...I appreciate the prayers and well-wishes more than I can express here.

Well, some good news, I opted for an optional and somewhat risky procedure where a catheter was inserted to deliver blood thinner directly on the clots in my lungs...it worked! I still have a clot in my leg but the medicine I will take for the next 3-6 months will dissolve it, the doctor said.

I ignored the swelling in my right leg for months, thinking it was nothing, it would go away, but it was the early signs of blood clots. My skin also developed a reddish rash on my leg. I post this as a PSA to all, for you and for your family and friends. If such symptoms develop seek medical attention immediately. One of the ER doctors fussed at me..."what exactly did you think was going on in that leg that you would ignore it for months?!"

I see that Prime Time Deion Sanders had blood clots removed from his leg. And I also suffer with degenerative hip disease like Bo Jackson had. I am in good company, eh! All we great athletes share so much in common...

Again, thank you for the prayers. It means a lot to me.

Just back from a follow up with my primary care doctor. She was reviewing the charts/reports from the two ERs and ICU I have recently visited. She shakes her head, mumbles "lucky to be alive." I said, "I have a guardian angle." She shoots me a look, "Hell! you must have a legion of guardian angles!" Hah! Maybe so...so, I have that going for me .

I will never lose my sense of humor, or my positive demeanor. It's who I am. But seriously folks, I came really, really close to not making it. I ignored the swelling in my leg thinking it would pass. Nope! Doctor said, "You think you're bullet proof." Not anymore, I don't. Please, again as a PSA...don't assume that little thing is just a little thing. Seek medical attention.

BB&B Guardian Angels are a handful or two!

My PSA was 4.4 in February. Had radiation treatment on the prostate for four weeks. (Absolutely nothing close to what you've gone though, 80!)
Two weeks ago my PSA had dropped to 0.00. I asked Dr. Lee Humble, my urologist and Tech hoops teammate, "how so. No numbers at all?"
"That's what we aim for." We high fived?
Continued prayers to you and your doctors.

Great job overcoming this. Be careful with the blood thinners. A friend of mine’s father had a minor heart procedure. In and out, same day. He was put on blood thinners and felt pretty weak. Like you said, no big deal this will pass. He is a retired guy who likes to work on his vintage cars in his shop (concrete floor) at his house. Well he passed out working alone. Spent 3 hours in the floor before another of his daughters started looking for him. Luckily he didn’t bleed out. This time a 3 1/2 week hospital stay, half in ICU. Still recovering at home.

I didn’t know you played basketball at Tech. What years were you on the team.

I played every afternoon . . . while the washers and dryers did their thing. Also, as trainer, I taped the ankles daily of three future D1 coaches: Mike McConathy, Tim Floyd and Jim Wooldridge.
Not all teammates wear uniforms. A handful of us washed them! ;-)

    Re: The Big C

Prayer request! Little girl here in Natchitoches, only 6 years old, named Maddie, is on her way to St. Jude's for treatment. She was in my grandson's kindergarten class. Her mother is a single mom having to take off work now, of course, so this will cause them a financial hardship. St. Jude's is totally free for the families, but not having income affects other things. Accounts are being set up at banks and there are fund raisers planned.

Beyond all of that is.... well, I'm sure you all understand how stupidly unfair this is. Damn! just a little kid. Yeah, I know there are other children fighting the Big C, but that doesn't make this any less regretful. Kids should not have to face this crap.

Please support St. Jude's. Even a $25 donation helps. And please remember lil Maddie and the other kids in your prayers.

We support St. Jude's annually, and it's is by far our largest charitable gift besides our church. All should donate!

    Re: The Big C

Got the good news this morning, results of a recent ultrasound, blood clots are completely gone! Doctor reminded me I had no business surviving this, said they lost two patients to blood clots half my age in recent weeks.

I am truly blessed. Don’t know why I keep beating the odds with cancer and blood clots but I do. If God has a plan for me as folks say, wish He would reveal it already.

    Again thanks for the prayers!
