    A punt or a 108-yard field goal

Shreveport Southwood has been to town and played the West Monroe Rebels last week.
On 4th down their scrimmage kicks were place kicks. Very interesting and very confusing.
A caller to ESPN on Wednesday said Southwood HS has been doing this on 4th down for a couple of years. They don't have a "punter" so they place kick.
This picture below might look like they were attempting a 108-yard field goal against West Monroe but it's really a punt.
Here is an URL to the placekick punt scrimmage kick.

My little brother plays for Southwood.

    The "punt formation" is embarrasing.

It actually worked pretty well considering. The kick was harder for the WM players to field than a spiral punt would have been. Without the "punt formation" the score may have been 70something at the half.

It gets blocked 65% of the time. For some reason or another, the linemen decide that going downfield to tackle the return man is more important than, you know, blocking someone.

I think Natchitoches Central used to does this with Scobee or another Tech kicker.

Ok...so lets say that they "punt" from this formation from say the opposing 40 yard line and a STRONG breeze comes from behind and this high school kicker makes an "unofficial" 57 yard field goal...is it a field goal or is it a punt?

Do you have to tell the official that you are in punt formation or field goal formation before every "punt"?

I have seen this formation before and do not like it.

Before you all jump on this one I'll back it up a bit... Due to the fact that a high school kicker could make a 57 yarder on occasion...possibly....

Lets say that it's from the 50 yard line and it is definately a PUNTING situation.

Re: A punt or a 108-yard field goal

It is 3 points. You don't have to tell because it's considered a scrimmage kick, which comes in three forms: punt, place kick or drop kick.
    In high school . . .
If the ball lands in the endzone, it's dead. A touchback.
If it goes out of bounds, its spotted there.
If it does not make it to the endzone, it's treated like a punt, but in college and NFL, the ball is spotted at the line of scrimmage at the time of the place kick.

Now, the question is . . . if you punt the ball through the uprights is it 3 pts.?

Yea...that's what I'm saying. Because we know that if you punt the ball from a "normal" punting formation/stance through the uprights it is a touchback the moment that it crosses the goal line. However, because one could say that this is a "normal" field goal attempting formation/stance how would one rule that? Obviously if it made it through the uprights the kicking team would want the 3 points but the defensive team would say that it was a punt because they have been punting from that formation/stance all night. I'm just curious as to how that situation would work out.

Burt Reynolds's drop kick in The Longest Yard was worth 2 points.
