BTW - there are 3 "urban legends" or mysteries on our campus & surrounding areas!!

Biomedical Engineering Building - the old hospital - There is a presence that inhabits the 4th floor (which used to be where the operating room was). The elevator continuously travels to the 4th floor although no offices are located there. It goes from the 1st floor (the old morgue) to the 4th floor, although another floor has been selected. Noises have also been heard on the 3rd floor when no one is around.

Howard Auditorium - A ghost is said to haunt Howard Auditorium. The seats in the auditorium are spring loaded and pop back up when you get out of them. However, if you go in there alone, one seat will always be down. If you go and push the seat up, later the same seat or another one in the auditorium can be found down, as if someone were sitting in it.

Stowe's Bar - was once a confederate hospital. Old equipment still stored upstairs (which is closed). On any given night footsteps can be heard from the first floor and the old beds can be heard sliding across the upper floor.

As a fellow Petroleum Engineer ('61 and 63), I've heard many of the "legends", especially since my family has Tech ties all athe way back to the class of '09 of which my grandmother was a member. But, I have to admit, I had not heard those. Where is the "old" hospital located? Is it actually on campus?

At any rate, my favorite legend is the one that's hard to dispute. That is...."every time a virgin walks by, the Lady of the Mist stands up".

Is it me, or does it seem like the the "Supernatural Events" associated with buildings on the Tech campus could be chalked up to poor maintenance?

How would you tie that in with the virgin scenario?

Well, I was referring to Mean Gene's list. As for the latter, I would have to defer to someone who's done more research in that field than myself.

Bill - From what I've read, the original Biomedical building ( not the new $10.5 million one ) is standing where the old hospital once stood. I was told by some of the older Techsters in my family that Tech was given a $50k grant in the late 70's to remodel the old hospital so they used the foundation & exterior walls but gutted the interior to better accomodate academics. Guess the former "patients" didn't take kindly to that!!

BTW - great win over those "imitation" Bulldogs from Miss. tonight!!!

I'm not sure if Smokey the Bear would approve of us putting an eternal flame directly underneath a tree :icon_wink: I do like the idea though. There needs to be a place on campus, explaining the origin of our mascot. But, for the falme, maybe we could retro-fit a bowl with an eternal flame to the Lady of the Mist. Have it sitting on her knee, maybe? Or, there's a little garden right in front of the Library that it could be put in the center of.

    tnkx.

That rose garden is actually where the time capsule is located under four feet of concrete--I think it was put there during the Cold-War Era to preserve the records to show that there was indeed an elite university in North Louisiana

When it comes to Bulldogs, Louisiana Tech is no Johnny-Come-Lately.
That is one awesome legend. If I were a prospective student, I'd be sold in a heartbeat.

When it comes to legends like that, I really don't think USM has anything to compare to it. We've got some pretty cool traditions but nothing that touches that story.

Let's see. We had a live Golden Eagle at one time who would fly around the stadium before kick off. His name was Nugget. I believe he died tragically when everyone evacuated because of a hurricane and some moron forgot to take him with them and I think he starved to death.

Oh, and if you thought Ole Miss was somewhat Racist, before we became The Golden Eagles, we were known as The Southerners and also The Confederates. We had a live mascot, General Nat. Named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest. I'll let you do a little research and find out what three initialed "exclusive club" he is generally credited for founding.

Thankfully, unlike our sisters to the North of us, we had the foresight and common sense to realize that this could be construed as EXTREMELY Offensive to some people and held a student vote to change the mascot decades ago. I think Ole Miss is getting around to it some time this year. I really hope they change it to Admiral Akbar. I might even like them a little bit if they run with that idea.

If my memory serves me correctly we also were the first major college in Mississippi to have an African American player on our team in the year 1970. His name was "Wee" Willie Heidelberg. He was an incredible running back. That year we faced Archie Manning and the Number 4 Team in the nation, Ole Miss. Heidelberg made their vaunted defense look like the Keystone Cops with the Three Stooges playing Linebackers. We beat them 30-14.

Their head coach, Johnny Vaught called it "The Worst Loss in Ole Miss History." After 3 days he suffered a heart attack and retired from coaching that year.

Sorry for yet another run on post but I love history, tradition, and football trivia.

That story of the brave bulldog and the fire got me to thinking about my own Alma Mater's traditions. We have a few. I don't think any school in the country could have as cool a story as that original heroic Louisiana Tech Bulldog.

Heck, We retired Bear Bryant and Johnny Vaught and I still don't think it is as cool as that bulldog and the fire.

I in no way want to spark a debate, but if you actually do do your research, you'll find that the "club" he founded was not intended to do what it became later on, and what it's infamous for. In fact, once it started to move that way, he tried to disband it and when that failed, he resigned and denounced it.

I remember our professor had us read the story about how Tech's mascot and colors came to be. It doesn't get any better than that.

Absolutely not true. Ruston was founded in 1883...that's 18 years AFTER the Civil War ended. How could it have been a Confederate hospital?

The Stowe's Building was, indeed, a hospital. Not sure when it became one, but it stopped being one in 1966. I've been up there....last time in 1980...and the 2nd and 3rd floors were still pretty much a stocked hospital. Even found a patients' sign-in book in a reception area, last entry in 1966. Story is a ghost (patient who died there?) began haunting the hospital, and it got so bad that one day they evacuated the facility, never to return.

I saw all sorts of things in that place back in the late 70's.
