    Cheers...

In light of some comments on other threads, I figured I would start this one. What cheers do you like / dislike? What ideas do you have for new material? What current cheers just need to be retired?

P.S. This is NOT the place to call out any person or group for any cheers they do. Simply saying what cheers you like and dislike will suffice.

    Re: Cheers...

    i loved; when the nmst team was throwing the ball inbounds and the cheerleaders decided to yell all around him; ht joined it;

yes it is rather DUKE like; but they do have a marvelous environment.

i think we also can make lots of difference when we collectively yell at the top of our lungs randomly as the opposing team crosses half court and continuing yelling....has a great effect when used at key moments.

i have many others; ill think and get back to you

    Favorites:

I am a fan of yelling at the top of our lungs when the other team is coming down the court, especially after a big offensive play on our end. When enough people do it, I really think it gets our guys pumped up more than any other cheer we do.

I am also a fan of keeping the cheers simple. I much prefer "DEFENSE! (CLAP CLAP)" and "DEFENSE, BULLDOGS, DEFENSE! (CLAP CLAP)" to "D-D-D Defense". For some reason, that stuttering D causes me to lose my breath before we get to the defense part

Definitely like the Hoop Troop's "HOO-VER!" chant.

    Not-quite-so-favorites:

The one where we chant L-O-U-I-S-I-A-N-A TECH! It's a great cheer in theory, but it's another one of those that is just too long and drawn out, IMO.

Any cheer calling for the team to "Shoot for two", "Score two more", or "We want two". "Two" high-schoolish.

Not a huge fan of "Hey, Ho, James Loe" more than once. I think it's good for him bringing the ball down for the first time each half.

I think "Sit down Coach" should be saved for when the coach is obviously out of line and deserves a Technical.

I used to be a big fan of "HEY REF, YOU SUCK!", but not so much anymore. That's why I have started "I RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH THAT CALL!!!". I know it's long, but it's a little more tactful.

    Potential Cheers:

When one of our guys blocks a shot: "RE-JECT, RE-JECT, RE-JECT"

Whenever Olu does something really good, I would love to hear the whole crowd chanting "OLUUUUUU!!!" like the saints crowd does whenever Deuce does something big.

CHEERS to how the whole team is playing over the last 4 games! Coming together as a team and ready to make a run in the WAC tournament.

The refs certainly get a kick out of it. I started doing that at baseball games last year, and I haven't seen an umpire yet that didn't laugh at it.

Another one I'm trying to get started is for women's games, when one of the other team's players is making a big deal out of a call: "BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY!!!"

It's funny how people are different cuz I really like that cheer, but upon thinking about it, I can see Jr's point. It's not a very practical cheer. Takes too long and difficult to understand.

Hey ref you suck is a very necessary cheer. Nothing can cause a worse feeling than an entire student body screaming you suck together. I know you are getting away from the vulgar stuff but when is the last time you telling "I respectfully disagree with that call" actually changed anything? He laughs and moves on. Everytime we do Hey ref you suck it leaves an impact on him some way. In fact last game we did it, I noticed every timeout the ref would stare at us for a minute.

Hey ref you suck is a step above nuts and bolts and the other cheers. You use it once or twice a game tops.

Speaking of Booing ref cheers...the "Why are you a ref" cheer should end. No remakes of classic cheers. Period.

    Re: Cheers...

No Hey, ho. James Loe period. How can I say this without "ragging" on James. Anyone else notice what typically happens after the HT does this cheer? Maybe it should be adjusted to Hey, no. James Loe.
    I agree about L O U I S I A N A TECH cheer.
Please no D D D Defense. That cheer dies quickly because it gets too fast.
No O O O Offense nor offense, clap clap, offense
I don't like the shoot for 2 either. Pretty much most cheerleaderish cheers. The crowd need to be able to follow a cheer. Stuff like "take it away defense take it away" will never be echoed by the crowd.

    Likes:
    Screaming
    Defense, clap clap, defense
    Go Dogs Go
    Go Tech Go
    Nuts and Bolts
    Zebra Zebra
I wanna be a ref...just like you -- in moderation
Chanting one of the players name that is playing well. Examples include Kyle Gibson. Magnum Roolle, OOLUUU, Guuytonn (Jamel Guyton doesn't sound right)
I love "Where you going?" but that is a football cheer that works some time in baseball. Maybe on a huge block that knocks the ball in the crowd or if a guy runs into one of our players and falls down. It has to be something big though.

I disagree. At least nuts and bolts is clever wordplay. I also don't think it serves any positive purpose. Like any of the other ref chants, it just shows the ref you are unhappy with the call. I just prefer to keep it classy.

Well you don't have to worry about that one anymore. I actually thought that it was kinda cute the first couple times..... last year..... and then it started up most times that he touched the ball. Just don't overkill ANYTHING.... EVERYTHING in moderation.

Sit down Coach should be used EVERYTIME that a coach is up yelling at officials. EVERYTIME.

BBBOOOOOO (D'Anthony's nickname), OLUUUUUU, GRRUUUUUUU, JUUUUNNNNEA, etc. could all be used after big plays.... but once again... in moderation. ONLY after Home Runs, Dunks, 3's, Sacks, etc.
