The idea that if there is some rule, regulation, memo, etc that says do this or don't do this, that it will be followed or is the "fix" to whatever problem there is or may be.

    Ties.

Tony Kornheiser (among others) sometimes talks about the fact that in his father's day, a grown man was not fully dressed unless he was wearing a tie. He usually says this in defense of wearing one.

What he doesn't say is that in his grandfather's generation, a grown man was not considered fully dressed unless he was wearing both a tie and a hat. I've always been kind of ticked and amazed that whoever it was (the whole generation or JFK or whoever you want to blame) somehow looked around at these two accessories and decided to keep the tie.

Let's see, one serves several purposes and the other is actually an incumbrance? Hmmmm? If we're going to get rid of one as a societal norm, which should it be? I know, let's keep the piece of cloth or string that we tie around our necks! That'll be practical and comfortable!

Having said that, I don't have to wear one very often and I am thankful for that. Oddly enough, my wife loves it when I wear one - and that can have nice side effects.

I think I read somewhere that the original use of the tie was to protect the neck from being cut during a sword fight. Don't know how accurate that is and really too lazy to look it up right now.

You would be correct, but the doctors only noticed a minimal difference between head on and head off, so it's optional for me now. So, for the last several years it's been no head for me.:bigcry:

When people constantly find something to complain about. Food portions, what song is playing, their "love" life, etc..
