Dallas celebrities butchering a Faith Hill song in a promotional video for the Super Bowl.

Warning: This is very cringe-inducing singing.

No worse than the original, IMO.

Mayer interpreting Petty. I like this.

But his attempt at the greatness of Crossroads doesn't work for me. Not at all.

You pretty much know it is going to suck when a sucky musician covers a song that already sucked. Damn, Inu, I like you, but I don't think we could ever do a roadtrip together.

It may not be clear from this thread, but my tastes run fairly wide. We'd probably just have to listen to Zepplin and Hendrix. That ain't bad road trip music.

And Free Falling is a great song, by a great artist, and in this case being covered by a . . . let's say "capable" one (I assume you mean Free Falling, and not Crossroads).

I almost said "at least one was auto-tuned into having the right pitch".

Ironically, the subject of "Free Falling" came up less than one hour ago when someone sent me an email with a typo -- "fell free" instead of "feel free." I disparaged them for the typo and then proceeded to disparage Tom Petty and the song.

The mayer version of "Free Falling" is ok. I like the music, but he does too much with his voice. Seems like he's trying too hard.
