I'd even get a keltec pf9 before a taurus. Did you look at one of those?

I did. They are tough to find on the market right now. I'll look at the Kahr CW9 if Academy has one in stock. It's funny, the one guy I know who has had a negative experience with a Taurus was with one of their snub nose revolvers.

I think Taurus has a quality control problem and that's why folks either love them or hate them. Every company puts out lemons. I've read many forums where Kimbers frequently had to go back to the shop.

It's a calculated risk. My budget isn't ready for a Kahr PM9 (which is what I would like to get), so I don't have trouble getting a gun that, by all accounts, is well designed, but may have to go back to Taurus in the event that I get a lemon. I'm okay with that. The PT709 has been out for about a year and a half. Most first generation guns have issues. I'm hoping Taurus has resolved some of them with the 709. What isn't debatable is that those who have a properly functioning 709 LOVE them.

If you need something for your pocket or boot and the target is only 6 to 10 feet away, a dose of truncated 85g HPs will be adequate. If a 1911 didn't weigh 30 ounces, I'd put it in my pocket or boot!

Cartek, I figure you've got the swankier models, but what are your thoughts on the GI series of 1911's by Springfield? Too stripped down? Would a Taurus for he same price be a better buy?

I don't have the GI Model but have no reason to suspect it to be anything but good. I have the Loaded Long Slide, Full Size, and Ultra-Compact; all in stainless and the latter with tritium sights.

A 1911 made by damned near anyone is serviceable, and I have heard good about the Taurus 1911. It has a lot of "custom" features, and there a couple I wish my Springfield's had (e.g., beveled mag well).

Kimbers were good when they were using S&W frames. They started making their own frams and started having many QC problems. I have read plenty about the newer Kimbers and would stay away from them.

Anything less than a +p heavy 9mm load or +p .38spl load is not adequately effective to stop somebody reliably.

Some people will run if you pull a weapon, some people run if you shoot them in the leg with a .22, and some might be hellbent on fighting you. Using small calibers puts the decision in the hands of the criminal as to whether the fight will continue.

You can fit small 9mm or .38s in your pocket. If you are a very small person I suggest taking the weapon clothes shopping to make sure there's room. I think everybody (who is serious about stopping somebody) should make the sacrifice to dress up to 9mm or .38.

A lot of people die frome .380 wounds......2 hours later in the hospital.

The Ruger LCP is a sweet little pistol though

For lack of a better way of saying it...the LCP is my grim reaper defense and fits nicely inside my boot. I don't anticipate ever having to use it, but one never knows when someone is being invited to go find another job.

On another point, if one is proficient with a handgun...a 22 WMRF is a choice that is often overlooked. There are multiple 9 shot revolvers on the market and KelTec is now offering a 30 shot that is the size of a 1911 but weighs about a pound less. My doctor friends tell me that the 22 WMRF literally destroys the innards because it generally bounces off bones once in the body cavity, which is analogous to the 223 and its damage down range.

I have the PF9; I bought it last year. I like it, but it took a while for me to get there. You won't confuse it for a higher end semiauto like a Kahr (it's not nearly as well made/robust as my H&K), but once I got through 150 rounds (and added a hogue slip on grip) it has been very reliable, and slightly more comfortable to shoot. Slightly. Two magazines worth and I'm ready to move on to another gun, especially if I shoot some +P that I usually carry in the gun. It's not that the recoil is particularly bad, but the gun is very light -- it's about like shooting the airweight S&W .38's as far as felt recoil. It just isn't a great "range gun" (nor is it designed to be). You should note the manufacturer recommends shooting a limited amount of +P ammunition in the gun. It's very small, but more importantly to me it's very thin -- I usually pocket carry when I'm carrying.

If you ever get through North Alabama, you're welcome to try it out...

I'm in middle GA, so I might make it over there. I stopped by the gun shop today and the 709 fits my pocket well. I've got an academy gift card and Academy doesn't carry Kel Tec. That might have made my decision.

I did notice on the 709 at the shop that the extractor had some burs on it. Some of them have it and some down. I'd suggest that if you get a Taurus give it a real good look over. If you see something that makes you wonder, see if they have another one you can look at.

I would get it if you are dedicated to testing it. Ammo ain't cheap though, unfortunately.

If anybody is interested I have 4 guns I have decided to sell. A Remington 12 guage, a Colt AR-15, Remington 270 and a Ruger 357. Just decided that I have too many different calibers. If you want more information send me a PM and I will tell you more about them.

Talk about an accurate handgun! This 357 I picked-up from Darbonne is absolutely the most accurate I've ever shot out to about 30 yards or so. Every once in a long while you luck into a good one and this one is definitely it. I love shooting this gun.

On another subject I was listening to gun talk a week or two ago and he mentioned that the modern 380 loads are equivalent to the older 9mm loads making it a good choice for a concealed carry or car weapon. I'm looking at the new Berettas in 380 for my "get back" gun but roll with the 357 with "rock-crusher" hollowpoints in my vehicle/business.
