Hurt NSU? Not in the short term, it won't. And, I don't think it'll have a measurable impact long term either. In fact, I think the merger will help NSU going forward. JMO. But, LSUS' general undergrad population is more on par with NSU's. For the most part, NSU has not competed with Tech for students. But, it has most definitely competed with LSUS, and LSUA.
I am surprised (perhaps, I shouldn't be) I am the only one on this board who seems to understand the dynamics of the student populations of regional universities. By "regional" I mean geography: CENLA, ARKLATEX, ARKLAMISS, East Texas.
Perhaps they are misguided, and maybe sitting wherever it is you are, you know more about their students, recruiting efforts, quality of students that enroll, etc... but I can tell you NSU powers-that-be support this merger. I mentioned elsewhere that this summer's Freshman Connection at NSU, for the first time in their history, is "sold out." They are scrambling to reopen a recently closed dorm to accommodate more students. Now, not all HS kids that attend such an event end up enrolling and actually attending in the Fall. But, NSU thinks just the possibility of the merger occurring is driving students to explore NSU.
Now, some NSUers are looking eagerly at LSUA. Some HOPE! the Tech-LSUS merger happens and is successful, and the state will consider an NSU-LSUA merger.
We all agree there are too many 4-year universities in the state.
