They would correctly say when to kick or go for 2. They would know when to punt or when to go for it on 4th based on real percentages. They would always call the right play based on the real percentage chance of success. I am being serious.
The coach at Pulaski Academy does that. He never punts and all of his kickoffs are onside. And, he has about a 90% winning percentage.

In 2010, one of Navy's defensive linemen told a group of us OL that we were the best, toughest OL he'd ever played against. He was a senior and had played against Notre Dame and some of the best OL's in the country. We as a group took pride in that and it was our mission (well before that comment) to beat the soul out of any DL we played from then until I graduated. If we didn't have at least 150 yards on the ground, I felt horrible after the game. I wanted any defensive linemen I walked away from to know he had played a tough group of guys that would scrap, fight, and punch him in the mouth EVERY play.

Having that attitude in the trenches permeates the rest of your team. When a team can see an OL pounding the ball and shoving a DL around, they feed off of that and play with that same type of attitude. I know we don't have that right now, and it pisses me off. To have set a foundation like we did as an OL the last few years (and guys well before me) and have the product I saw on the field Saturday is a disgrace. I don't care who was in the game, but for us to be that soft, lifeless, and useless and to only rush for 37 yards is a disgrace. I hope our OL is ashamed of that performance because it's a disgrace to the guys who came before you and set the precedence of tough, aggressive, and passionate play in the trenches. And I know it's not all of our OL, but this is a message to you Jens Danielsen, and whatever your names are #78 and #67. Stephen Warner says you are soft, weak, and scared. You have shown me that you have no desire to perfect your craft as an OL and you haven't show me any toughness, desire, or passion. And until you prove me wrong, you don't deserve to wear the Tech T or play at the Joe.
Stephen you are old school like Me, Snod, Willie, Hunt and Apple. I agree and we would have loved having you on our team in the late 80's early 90's. The team this year doesn't seem to have heart on either side of the ball. Dixon is the only guy I see that gives a shit. This needs to change!

I see a lot of heart out there, but I'm seeing it being ripped out. Dixon, Hunter Lee, Guillot, Cobb, IK, Ellis, Liggins, Blake Martin, and Higgins (to name a few) all show heart, imo.

Agreed. The majority of those guys are showing heart. But my main problem with it is look who you named. All of those guys (with the exception of Cobb, and he was a transfer from another 4 year university) have been at Tech since the beginning of their career.

I'm not knocking juco players, but they have a different mentality without a doubt. To me, too many juco players, once again, NOT ALL OF THEM, are thinking of themselves and don't have the same heart that 4 year commits from HS have. To me, the Quinton Patton's, Oscar Johnson's, Myles White's, Ray Holley's, and others are the exceptions to the rule, not the standard. A lot of times, they just pick us because we may have been the only school to offer a way out of juco, or either just the only one that they thought was decent. To me, that doesn't inspire the same heart beat that you get for a school when you make that commitment coming straight from high school. You are making a commitment for 4-5 years and you KNOW that going in.

Once again, I LOVE the guys that came to our program from junior college, all of them will be life long friends. But I do feel that there are plenty more junior college players that don't play for a school, but rather for themselves. That is a product of junior college in itself. They are usually in an environment where you are doing whatever you can for yourself so you can get out of there and go somewhere else. And I think a lot of the time, the college they choose ends up being another "spot to play" while they work towards something else (whether they are capable of playing after college or not). 4 year guys tend to have more of an allegiance to the school itself, not just the concept it represents. In my opinion.

And maybe that is a product of not having that mindset changed when they get here. Maybe it is the coaches job to change that mindset if he senses it is there. Idk. But I feel like with a lot of juco players, it's not really their ability that keeps them from excelling in D1, it's their mindset.

I think you may be on to something there. A JUCO should be a rare signing (2 max). It's a desperation move to add some immediate depth. You build a team long term on HS kids who are fully invested in the school and team.

For it to happen now, I think our only option is to force him to quit. Maybe we could station a sexy blond intern outside his office with keys to a Harley with no brakes...

Or perhaps offer him an extremely enticing offer in the real estate business and set it up as a ponzi scheme. He goes bankrupt, can't coach, we're free!

Just like to point out that I got absolutely hammered at the game and had a blast. The team is terrible this year, all the better reason to drink.

Part of what makes a great university is the atmosphere on gameday. It's okay to give up on the team every now and then, but don't give up on the University. That's what your butts in the stands really mean.

Give up on personnel or a player sometimes but NEVER the team or University!

Some one in Sunday School asked me last Sunday how I sat through that game?

My reply was "Not too well, I was way too sober..."
    ''Don't be a bad dagh..."
