Unfortunately, the response to limit the economic damage is already too late. Massive unemployment is here next week. Any payroll relief impact is going to be severely blunted by the delay in getting out. This was all foreseeable. The delay was inexcusable.

Limiting economic damage in this environment is like protecting your house against a forest fire with the garden hose. The damage is only beginning and next week's unemployment is just a pimple on your nose.

We have no idea how it was communicated to the Chinese, so it could have been done well or poorly. That part is a matter of diplomacy. Given the trade and security tensions we have had with China, it would have been helpful to give them a heads up. I suspect we did.

The mutual travel ban with Canada was coordinated.

I personally think we need to ban buying products from commie China after we replicate their services here in the States. Trump has given drug manufactures and pharmaceuticals a clear sailing green light (no red tape) to get up and running ASAP so that China doesn't have drugs over our heads.

No delay? We could have passed the small business loan that had forgiveness for the portion going to payroll weeks ago (before people actually got laid off). Once they are laid off, this loan doesn’t help anymore.

Apparently Louisiana has seen 28,000 unemployment applications this week (m-w) compared to 1,800 the week before.

The point that you might be missing is that once the outbreak spreads, the death rate is a function of how much you exceed your ICU capacity. It is closer to 1 percent if you stay under your treatment capacity. It goes over 6 percent when you exceed it.

Flattening then curve will save 10X the lives because it keeps us from overrunning our resources. SKorea has 3 times our hospital beds.

RBC reran their model with the latest data and it has gotten worse. They are projecting in the base case that we will start exceeding our hospital capacity next week.
