By the way, this one had to grow on me, but I really like it more the more I listen to it. I think they are pretty well regarded in the metroplex (they come from Tyler), but I have to admit I was pretty disappointed the first few times I listened to it. Maybe it is the kind of thing you need to be in the right mood for, or just a little of an acquired taste.
Neither of these is one of their best in my opinion, but the only videos of their better songs seem to be crappy concert videos.

I don't know, I think there are still artists that put the effort in to release nothing but quality work as best they can. And I think you had plenty of filler albums as long as there has been recorded music. It's just easy to get "good ole days" syndrome about the stuff you grew up on.
I also think that for some reason certain genres tend to lend themselves to this more than others. Country and rap are both serious offenders in the "sell millions of cds solely on the strength of one single" category. Ever try to listen to the non-singles on a George Strait album? Weak.

Who DIDN'T love hearing this on Saturday mornings when Big John Studd and Andre were beating down Randy Savage. HERE COMES THE HULKSTER!!
What are the Classic albums of today? I think the fact that the record business is in such a slump is directly related to what you said, one good track and a bunch of crap. I can remember lots of albums that sucked from long ago as well so it's not just good old days syndrome. There just does not seem to be a Rumors or Dark Side of the Moon out there. Maybe I'm wrong but I listen to satelite radio alot, I hear a lot of strong cuts but nothing consistant.
Hmm...the last great ALBUM?
Man. I'm surfing through the rock genre and...I dunno Guiss....you know I love Tool as much as you do, but I don't consider 10,000 Days CLASSIC.
You might have to go all the way back to Outcast's Stankonia or (someone will shoot me for this) The Marshall Mathers LP for something truly CLASSIC, from the first track to the last.

I doubt we will know they are classics until we are still listening to them in 30 years. All Eyez on Me and The Chronic are "classics" in their genre (granted, not really from "today" but after the period you are talking about). The first Coldplay cd is solid, the first Norah Jones might hold up, I personally think Ryan Adam's Gold is great from beginning to end, maybe Jennifer Knapp's Kansas or Caedmon's 40 Acres.
I wonder if part of the problem/solution is the wider accessibility of music. Most of us posting in this thread have at the very least fairly strong opinions about music (or are outright music snobs). I doubt many of us do much more than stop by a
"top 40" type station to see what is playing (if that). I certainly doubt many of us in this discussion would listen to that kind of station for more than a song or two. But we all still find stuff we like.
That used to be harder to do. Back in the day if only 10 out of 100 songs was good, and only 2 of those songs got played - those songs would become huge. Now it seems we are more likely to find those other 8 songs, which reduces the popularity of the 2. They're still good songs, but they aren't the islands in a sea of crap that they once were, so they won't draw the same devotion.
Maybe you can substitute "album" for "song."
Or I could be wrong. Kind of just throwing this out there, thinking through it as I go. I'm just skeptical that the format harms the quality of the music (musically anyway, obviously the sound is connected to the format).

Just in a "trip hop" mood today. Might listen to some Portishead next.

Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The deal is the songs don't go together anymore. They are meant to be released as singles not to fit together to make a really cool CD/Album. Instead of one album of many songs they are just 13 singles.
I still think there is good new music being made though.
So you are saying these albums will be universally accepted as classics in the way that Zep IV is? My point is not that the music is bad but that the format makes it difficult to make a classic piece of work. Also from my perspective I don't listen to as many CD's all the way through as I used to. If I like a cut I'll purchase the download but that's about as far as it goes. So maybe these Albums that have been mentioned will turn out to have that kind of wide spread acceptability. I doubt that when "Never Mind the Bullocks" came out everyone was on board but do to the revolutionary nature of the album it has grown in stature. I don't know I'm just questioning the very nature of the music biz at the moment.
