    Re: 12/29 HOUSTON game

on the game itself, our play was the exact opposite of our play at new mexico and arizona.

only one rushed 3-pointer, and that one wouldn't have been a bad shot to take if olu had taken the time to stop his momentum and make a good shot. i really don't remember any ill-advised shots other than that one.

guyton just was not on last night, but i think he played it right -- he tried to shoot himself out of the slump, but didn't push it when it didn't come.

we got the ball inside a lot and made use of our height advantage.

the refs weren' calling reaching around and grabbing fouls on houson all night. we finally picked up on that toward the end and started doing it a little bit, too. i hate to see a game turn into a wrestling match, but that was a good job of adapting to the environment.

the only complaint i have with the Dawgs' play is that we let them hurry us and get a lot of turnovers on bad passes. hopefully the coaches will use that as a teaching opportunity.

sure it does, but so does getting steals and forcing turnovers, which is the purpose of going with a small lineup.

    Good post.

Defensively, Murray State played a similar aggressive defense with lots of hands hitting arms and bodies. That game probably helped us adapt in this game. One major difference was the Cougars were very good at stripping the ball from our guys after rebounds.

Offensively, we seem to do better when we get the ball inside to Magnum and Olu. They both draw a lot of attention when they have the ball. This opens up other players. We did a good job of that most of the time.

Regarding the refs: On TV/Internet it is harder to see than being courtside but from my internet view I thought the refs called a good game and let the game flow. We did adapt to their calls as you stated. Adapting to the refs is a major part of the game. That is one of many areas where I believe Coach Rupp excels - making in game adjustments.

a wrestling match, i tell you. most of those "strips" involved slapping and grabbing arms. they crawled all over us when we were dribbling, too. i'm all for letting the players play the game, but that's not the way the game is meant to be played.

I agree, it looked like DeAndre was mugged every time he brought the ball up the court. I think Kyle did better, just because he is bigger and could take more mugging.

except that one time he got called for the foul holding the guy back when he knocked the ball away. the guy just pushed him off the ball, then knocked the ball away once it was out of kyle's reach.

Agreed, I will give it to them for calling it both ways, though. However, it was very physical, which should have played to our advantage given our size advantage. However, it took us some time to realize it. We could have put that game away a lot earlier if we had not pissed the ball away 2 or 3 times in a row there at the end. We were the better team, and I was confident that we would win the game after watching the first half. We went on some nice runs in the second half, but every time it looked like we would pull away, they hit a crucial three.

I was not impressed with their arena and lack of updates. TCU arena is a little better from fan viewing, old even with some updates.

TAC has both beat in my opinion, easily. Now if we can start averaging over 3,000 per home game so it helps in any future conference shakeups because population and media market (Monroe, Shreveport) is not going to do it.

Btw, it didn't hurt to go 22 of 27 from the charity stripe either.

One of biggest surprises to me was seeing Olu make some free throws for a change. Hope this continues as he is going to get fouled a lot in paint and late in games as opponent will want to put him on the line versus others.

For a PG, Brown should shoot fout tries a little better.

I thought Rupp did a good job of getting the ball in Kyle's hands when we were in the single bonus time. He drove to the lane and got to shoot the one and ones, since he is a great FT shooter. After we got into the double bonus, we fed Magnum the rock. They never really fouled him, he would just go up for get easy buckets inside due to great positioning and quickness that UH just couldnt handle.

....and when we missed, we killed 'em on the boards. I only saw the 2nd half, but it appeared that we got a lot of easy "put backs" for high percentage shots.
