Absolutly False... it usually is the word that the article preceeds, but not always. "The is always used, never "Thuh."

is that really how the rule works? i thought the a/an difference was more of a pronunciation thing. you need an "n" before a vowel sound so that the sentence flows correctly when read out loud.

for example, "a beautiful evening" wouldn't sound right if it were "an beautiful evening,"
or, "an awful time." would be hard to say as "a awful time."

I was incorrect earlier in saying that it applies to the word which the article modifies. I was not thinking along the lines of another adjective being added in the sentence. However, the rule still states that you would use "Use A before words that begin with a consonant sound, and AN before words with a vowel sound." Do not confuse sounds with spellings, as I illustrated in my earlier examples "a university" and "an uncle."

Wow! I thought you knowd your stuff. If the above is the case, then you'll have a hard time finding a "proper talking" example to back it up. It's almost the same rule as a/an.

I have never in my life heard of this rule of pronunciation. I'm ashamed as a teacher that I haven't.
