do we need to revive the grammar thread?

"thee" before a vowel sound, "thuh" before a consonant sound.

and a/an depends on the word it preceeds, not the word it modifies.

Absolutly False... it usually is the word that the article preceeds, but not always. "The is always used, never "Thuh."

or, "an awful time." would be hard to say as "a awful time."

are you telling me you would tell someone, "i'm having a awful time"?

the Ah sound at the begining of the word aweful is a vowel sound, therefore you would use "an"

I was incorrect earlier in saying that it applies to the word which the article modifies. I was not thinking along the lines of another adjective being added in the sentence. However, the rule still states that you would use "Use A before words that begin with a consonant sound, and AN before words with a vowel sound." Do not confuse sounds with spellings, as I illustrated in my earlier examples "a university" and "an uncle."

exactly. but the article doesn't modify "awful" -- it modifies "time."

Wow! I thought you knowd your stuff. If the above is the case, then you'll have a hard time finding a "proper talking" example to back it up. It's almost the same rule as a/an.

    Learned it in first grade.:icon_wink:

I have never in my life heard of this rule of pronunciation. I'm ashamed as a teacher that I haven't.
