Evaluating the system and changing the system are two very different things....and Congress with their mostly ignorant constituency are the ones who can change it. They either bump up the premiums at some point or push back the age with which can receive benefit or reduce benefits, and you have no choice in the matter. That is as unAmerican as it gets. It is crap.Private insurance companies try to make a profit. A social insurance program like social security does NOT have to make a profit. The government self-insures itself. I don't know what risk you are talking about with regards to Social Security since actuaries constantly evaluate the system.

No choice in the matter? It's called representative government, and while it may seem crappy, it is far better than other forms of government.

Yes, it is a forced retirement plan in that taxes are collected to pay for it but no one is forced to receive benefits from it. As I recall, Ronald Reagan never applied for benefits.
