Here I disagree, but, not surprisingly, it is a matter of semantics. The "laws" of physics are a human attempt to describe created phenomena. So, inasmuch as they are "written," they are also "imperfect." Similarly, when we try to apply our understanding of these created phenomena to solve problems or extend our capabilities, these endeavors are fraught with imperfections, because our understanding of the phenomena are limited.

I think the same holds true for communication. We are still trying to figure this whole thing out, so we try to come up with some agreed upon rules for applying the ability to communicate. As with physical phenomena, things tend to work smoothly to the extent that all parties share a reasonably overlapping understanding of the phenomena, and that their understanding of the phenomena fits well enough with the realities of the phenomena.

Don't worry, your cups were replaced "for a reason."

    Re: peeve of the day

i'm so peeved that the only way i can avoid breaking my own rules for this thread is to give the peeve for every day this week in advance:

    sunday: general motors.

monday: so-called "american" car companies that use all-metric parts (although it beats the mixed metric and english they used to have).

tuesday: vehicles that have the hood packed so full of junk that you can't get to anything without removing everything else.

wednesday: vehicles with components packed so tight you have to contort your body and use special tools to spend an hour making 1/8 turns at a time on bolts that don't even have enough clearance to come out without removing even more junk.

thursday: "american" car companies that use plastic and flimsy aluminum for parts that need to be robust and durable, but use heavy-gauge steel with 15mm bolts for parts that don't do anything but get in the way and could be replaced functionally by a zip-tie.

friday: those darned spring clamps they use on radiator hoses. what's wrong with a screw clamp?

saturday: houston metro area vehicle inspection requirements.

    that is all.

Read an article about this titled "Form vs Function" It said that the reason the above happens is that when a new car model is designed, it is turned over to the engineering department after the design department has finished. the engineering depart. is told to hurry up because the design depart. took too long and don't spend too much because the design depart went over budget. It noted that trucks are usually done by the engineering depart because no one in design wants to which results in trucks usually having plenty of room under the hood and being put together with bolts. Article is a few years old so not sure if it still applies to trucks.

You think American car companies pack it in there it tight? Look at where Mazda places the dipstick (which you need to check regularly) and the oil filter on the RX8. Those metal hose clamps are placed in the perfect spot to cut your forearm up once you get the oil filter wrench under the coolant line and intake manifold and between the engine block and the firewall. If you want to do any real repair work, you pretty much have to take off the airbox, body panels, wheels, and wheel wells.

Ripping up perfectly good sidewalks to replace with new ones to make everything look "more beautiul" and match. Tax-payer dollars at work.
